New Mexico – Santa Fe & Taos

I’ve always wanted to go to New Mexico, partly because of my fascination with the world of Breaking Bad and partly because of my love for mountains. We went to Albuquerque for 5 days during the Holiday break. There is so much to explore in this state, we couldn’t even make it to a lot of places on our list.

Santa Fe is the oldest city in NM and steeped in cultural richness. On day 1, we drove straight to the art district along Canyon Road. This area houses many art galleries showcasing Native American sculptures, weaving and jewelry along with contemporary artwork. You cannot take a bad picture here. The bright doors and windows pop against the earthy colors beautifully. It was a cold day with fresh snow on the ground. If you find yourselves in this area, I highly recommend getting a meal at Cafe Pasqual’s (best mexican hot chocolate ever!). Check out some pictures below –

Next, we drove to the town of Taos nestled in the Sangre de Cristo mountains. On our way there, we stopped at El Santuario de Chimayo, a Roman Catholic church with an interesting history. Visitors from all over the world  come to visit ‘el pocito’ which is a hole in the church filled with the holy dirt that’s supposed to have healing powers. We drove on to Taos to stop and tour the pueblo, the home of Tiwa-speaking Native American tribe of Puebloan people. As the sun set over Taos, we made our way back to Albuquerque, stopping to admire the luminarias (candle lit paper lanterns) in Santa Fe.
